What is Ikebana?

A uniquely Japanese art where nature and human sensibility meet

Ikebana is not just a flower arrangement,

It is a traditional art unique to Japan that combines the beauty of nature with human sensibility to create a space.

While respecting the individuality of the branches and flowers,

By making use of the "gaps" in space, we express invisible beauty and blank spaces.

Also, during the quiet time spent facing plants,

You can become aware of your own emotions and feelings

This inner dialogue is one of the great attractions of Ikebana.

History of Ikebana

A story of flowers and people passed down for over 700 years

The origin of Ikebana is in the "Kuge" (offering of flowers to Buddha),
From the 14th century, during the Muromachi period (1330s), it began to become an independent artistic expression.

During the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries), the style was established,

Since the Meiji period (1868-), various schools have emerged,
Ikebana has developed into a culture that is widely connected to people's lives.

Nowadays, while fusing with art and design,

It is expanding into more free and individual expression.

And this history and aesthetic sense are highly valued.

December 16, 2024, in accordance with traditional styles, seasonal plants and flowers,
Choosing a vase, using flower scissors and other flower tools, and using traditional techniques,
"Ikebana" has been registered as an intangible cultural property of Japan.

Ikebana is not just a flower arrangement,

As a "culture of form" that is passed down through the ages,
Even today, we continue to convey the Japanese aesthetic sensibility to the world.

About Ikebana Schools

Over its long history, Ikebana has developed into various schools.

For example, Ikenobo, known for its dignified classical style,

Sogetsu School, which focuses on contemporary creative expression,

Ohara-ryu, which pursues the beauty of flowing water,

Each has a different philosophy and aesthetic sense, enriching the world of ikebana.

About the Dragon School

The spirit of modern ikebana, moving back and forth between form and freedom

The Ryusei school was founded in 1886.

It is a school that is rooted in tradition but also places emphasis on modern forms.

The Ryusei school of Ikebana, which is derived from Ikenobo, the oldest school in Japan, has the philosophy of learning the form and then freely expressing individuality.

I have been devoting my efforts to deepening Ikebana as an expression of emotion.

At "Oora Hana," we cherish the teachings of the Ryusei school,

We offer lessons in both classical and free flower arranging.
